About Us
We've been working as carpenters, designers, and handymen for years. Uncommon Craftsmen was founded on the principle that everyone deserves to work with honest, accountable, communicative contractors. We strive to take the same amount of care and careful craftsmanship on each and every project, from helping a renter make a tough and tiny space into a comfortable home to designing and building a custom statement piece for a company from scratch.
Whether you have years of learned experience hiring service providers or aren't even sure how to get started, we'll meet you where you are and treat you with respect, no matter your background or experience level.
David Bielewicz
Owner & Co-Founder
he/him/his
David’s love for woodcrafting started as a child when he served as a carving and painting artist’s apprentice to his grandfather in upstate New York. He studied stagecraft, design, and construction at Point Park Conservatory of Performing Arts and trained under KML Carpenters for two years with the Carpentry Union. He’s served as the technical director and foreman for several Pittsburgh theaters and when he’s not at work you can find him under a pile of sawdust, plaster, or design drafts in his old Observatory Hill fixer-upper.
Britton Mauk
Lead Designer & Co-Founder
he/him/his
Art and design are second nature in the Mauk family and Britton grew up immersed in contracting, woodworking, carpentry, and art. He received his MFA in Scenic Design from Carnegie Mellon University and has spent nearly a decade designing for theaters from Pittsburgh to Portland. Britton loves finding creative solutions for homes and since becoming a Greenfield homeowner has updated his house’s old bones with features ranging from stained glass hexagonal windows and custom wall murals to an outdoor deck with built-in gardens.
What Folx Say About Us
It was a great experience. Not only did they work with our budget, but they shared home improvement techniques so that we could become a little handier ourselves. I'd highly recommend working with Uncommon Craftsmen."
Clare Drobot, Homeowner
David and Britton designed and painted a mural across our entire basement. They listened to our ideas, took note of our suggestions, and delivered a project that makes us smile every time we go downstairs.
Kathryn & Ian, Homeowners
Britton and David were able to run with some vague hand-waving and descriptions on my part, and the project turned out marvelously! They had great suggestions to add nice finishing touches and even came out well under the estimated cost."
